Ask a child to name a fairy tale story and you will not only get one but strings of titles in a go. The next thing you know, you wish you never ask anyone, child nor adult if you expect to get a one title answer. Lets rewind back to our childhood memories and dig deep into all the fairy tales storybooks we owned. Sleeping Beauty, Beauty and the Beast, Rapunzel, Little Mermaid, Peter Pen, Cinderella, Thumbelina, Snow white and the Seven Dwarfs, Pinocchio, Alice in Wonderland and many more. The funny thing about all these fairy tales, i understood the storyline, the moral of the story and even gave life to all the characters in them. All except one, Alice in Wonderland. I never understand the story even though i read it through so many times. The more i read it, the more confused i got. I don't know where to extract the moral out of it except don't fall into a hole. What's up with the waistcoat rabbit and all the creatures in wonderland. Big head, poker cards attached with arms and legs, puffy dress, yucky talking colourful insects and a world of distortion with all shape and sizes. In a another word, a CLOWNISH world. At the same time if anyone saw the movie 'IT', clown wouldn't be at the top of favourite childrens fairy tale characters list. Aside from the physical outlook of the whole 'wonderland', the characters all seems so cunning. How could a 5 year old like me handle all these cunning creatures? Everywhere you go someone is out there to cheat you. Drink this and you will shrink to ant size. Eat this and the next thing, you realize you had grown godzilla in size. Yes i know, the writer include cheating and cunning as a touch of reality but isn't it too early to announce to a 5 year old of how the real world is. Alice in wonderland. Seriously? The whole 'wonderland' term just doesn't seems right. More like horrorland to me.
But that's the whole point. It's not wrong to think the wonderland is not right. And that's what the writer tried to portray out. The wonderland is not suppose to be logical. Its a land that challenge the imagination. A table should be symmetrical in shape but who sets such rules. In wonderland, everything can be anything. We saw out of proportion sizes and shapes. The writer challenge us to think out of the box. Think of the unthinkable. The wonderland is like an open minded mind, free from all the rules and regulation. Its an art on its own. But me being me, i don't enjoy the story. I got nervous, confused and lost in the storyline. In a world without law and order, i cant help but to feel like we were transported back to the dark ages where barbarian runs free. There were no civilization and life was full of crimes, sex slaves and corruptions.
Tim Burton's side of Alice in wonderland on the other hand touches more to the real world. At least i know the line that separate the good and the bad side. The characters are more clearly distinct. If you are on the good side then you are on the good side throughout the story. No jumping over to the enemy's side or any sort. Since i can differentiate the good and the bad clearly shows there's legal system in wonderland. Anyway after watching the show, i still prefer the simple classic fairy tale story of girl meeting boy, fall in love and they live happily ever after. End.
