Berlin mauer 1961 - 1989

Mother and with her dead son sculpture in Neue Wache. The best part of it was there's an oculus above it which exposed it to the weather outside symbolizing the suffering of victims of world war 2.

In the coming 2 days, we will once be reminded of the unification of the long forced separation of the west and the east Berliners. The Fall of the Berlin Wall. I was four when they took down the wall. It is amazing i still have a vague memory of the day. News were on tv, front pages of newspapers and on people's topic of conversations. I know it sound impossible to be four years old and aware of the news but i do remember. And we think four years old have no brains, think again.

Where the wall used to be..

Berlin has its history written all over the city. The whole city is a museum itself. As i walk the street of berlin, it was like i was flipping through the history book itself only everything was written visually. I was one excited kid because i was into german history a lot. Never will one fails to bring germany up when learning on world history. The nazi, adolf hitler, the jews, the world war 2, the soviets and of course the famous berlin wall. By mentioning a few, we can see that Germans had gone through a lot of war and suffering. Its been 20 years since the fall of the berlin wall, some might still be healing, some might be celebrating, some never survived but all in all it is a celebration we all should embrace. No one should be robbed of their freedom and definitely not by building a wall.

Checkpoint charlie. Used to be one of the 2 checkpoints open to non germans.

One piece of the wall standing. Many of the wall were taken down and destroyed. Some were given to other countries and institution. Some were made as souvenirs.

Original wall in front of a souvenirs shop. Graffiti drawing were mostly seen on pieces of wall like this.

The original east side of the wall still intact. The wall was chipped into small pieces to sell to tourist which explain the massive damages seen here.

The replica of the east side of the wall in front of the berlin wall museum. The wall was 3.6 metre high and 1.2 metre wide. At the top of the wall was shape like a smooth round pipe to make it harder for people to climb over.

The famous Brandenburg gate.
